One of Seven
A born optimist, I love being around people. Perhaps it’s because of being one of seven children I have always been flexible, adaptable and understanding for the needs of others. Not much space and time or privacy getting on with each other was the only option. Taking responsibility was at the core of family life and so loyalty, commitment and ‘pulling your weight’ were commonplace. We were a team and there was no room for division.
As part of my own ‘escape’ and need for privacy I found myself often engrossed in walking, doodling, drawing and photography. All of these interests I did alone. I had my own camera at 16 and developed my own prints in the bathroom. I had my own imagination and privacy for company and although I had lots going on around me, I would escape into my own world of thinking. My interests were a far cry from a hectic school and family life. I was very happy and most of that was from being alone.
Despite this, I believe my upbringing also made me fond of company, very easy going and provided me with a curiosity and fascination with people generally. Although my hobbies were isolating, I found this a benefit. I could think deeply of the world around me and appreciate it from my own creative perspective.
Studying Graphic Design at Birmingham I met my future wife and life partner and with seven years in London and two children later I had established a career within the creative sector.
As a strategic thinker, focusing on customers behaviour and marketing ideas I have always believed that the most valuable assets of any business are it's people. Product and service is important of course but if you have great people success comes easier and faster.
By enjoying working with people as much as possible is where I believe the magic of business lies. Hence, my style of working, although highly professional and detailed is also relaxed, informal and hugely enjoyable.
Living in Leeds and having a wonderful Yorkshire life, I feel very fortunate to have the healthy life balance and career that I now have. And with only two children to negotiate I now have more time than my parents ever had!
Must have been 2 years old. Scruffy but happy.
